Are you stuck in a creative rut? Trying to make plans, but just can’t seem to generate that one dynamite idea? Can’t get into a flow?
Well, please read on.
Several weeks ago there was a post at The Sales Lion where Marcus Sheridan wrote about Ameena Falchetto’s Brand Identity Visualisation (BIV). I do branding for a living, so this topic intrigued me. In fact, I thought, Bang! Ameena has something going here. No-diggity, right?
Then I started thinking about my blog and my process. Mr. Creative had no routine away from the screen.
I have goals. I write every day without fail. I forge ahead with my plans. BUT, but … I’m a visual person. A right-brained thinker with a left lobe on permanent vacation.
So, reading this post led to a tiny revelation. Why don’t I create a diagram about what I want to do, not just once, but often. Every day often. Where I want to go and what I want to do with this blog. Pen and paper would be my friend.
Eureka! A moment of triumph and discovery.
Ameena’s talent for combining branding and illustration inspired me to tweak my idea generating process, especially when I’m stuck in a rut. I now practice my own special form of stick figure chicken scratch, but it’s just for me. I can design, but illustration ain’t my beat, dig?
A mind mapping, loose illustration, have fun and just visualize what you want to do exercise.
Now those creative juices flow.
You can call it whatever you want. It gets me away from the computer and makes me feel like the caped crusader of creativity. Okay, I embellish, but my eyeballs do thank me.
You can see my creation below. It’s not great, I know, but it’s for me and only me. Consider yourself lucky that I let you peek into my world. This is the last time. Sorry.
I wrote this post because:
1. This is a great way to jump start your day.
2. This practice will engage the right hemisphere of your dome. Get that noggin engaged in some good, creative fun. You’ll be surprised at the results.
3. You might just discover you ARE an amazing artist. (again, I’m not)
If you are stuck creatively.
If you have a hump you need to climb over.
If you want to massage that brain cramp and get those synapses firing, your brain spark is here.
Well, what are you waiting for?
Don a cape, get out the pen and paper and unleash your creative superpowers.
Get away from that screen and start drawing, pronto. Colored pens are da bomb, but a trusty ball point will do just fine.
I don’t care what people say, stick figures rule, so just draw and don’t worry how it looks, it’s obvious I don’t.
To really make this work, you need to jump on over to Ameena’s place and learn about her projects. She must be doing something right, being endorsed by said Lion and this humble little blogger by the name of Marie Forleo.
Trust me, inspiration will come, and you just might commission Ameena to craft your very own BIV.
Are you a stick figure artist waiting to be discovered?
What daily practices bring out your creativity?
Do you have any other ideas for kick-starting the creative process?
