The late Bob Ross hosted the PBS TV show “The Joy of Painting.” And for many of years he lured people in with his dulcet tones – A hypnotic whispering that put you in a trance-like state. So subtle, but so alluring in a strange kind of way.
Do you ever get that feeling? A certain tingling running down your spine? A sensation Andrea Seigel describes as “starbursts in your head.”
Andrea was featured on a recent version of This American Life (A tribe called rest), where she went into great detail about her “Super human laser.”
It’s called Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), described perfectly at knowyourmeme.com:
“Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a term used to describe a sensory experience characterized by a pleasant tingling sensation in the head and scalp, which can be triggered by sounds like whispering or brushing, and visual stimulus like painting or drawing. On YouTube, the phenomenon inspired the creation of “whisperer” videos, in which people attempt to trigger the viewer’s ASMR by speaking in a soft voice and making various sounds with inanimate objects.”
People with this “biological phenomenon” often seek out videos that are kind of odd, slightly porny, and strangely titillating, even for non ASMR folks.
Check out Maria at “Gentle Whispering” or “The Water whisperers” if you don’t believe me.
Soft-core whispering porn. Well, not exactly, but I don’t have this super sensitivity and Maria sure gave me that tingling sensation … You?
Seriously though, what in the world does this have to do with blogging or online marketing?
Well, everything really.
You see, ASMRs are a special breed. And Andrea is part of a tribe with this amazing sensitivity to sound (a super human laser).
Okay, Wikipedia calls this “an alleged biological phenomenon,” but stick with me on this …
Just look at how many views The Good Witch, Maria aka “Gentle Whispering” has.
Now think about your online efforts and how you are trying to gain traction, make your blog sticky, lure in those peeps you know will love your stuff.
Are you conking them over the head OR are you practicing a more subtle approach?
In Daniel Pink’s book, “To Sell Is Human,” he talks about the power of attunement. Attuning yourself with others and not relying too much on your vantage point. If you see the world through another’s perspective you’ll be much better off.
In fact, perspective-takers (those truly attuned) fare better than those who push, and also fare better than those who simply empathize.
The whisperers mentioned above are certainly in tune with their audience. They’ve embraced their tribe fully and they give thousands (maybe millions) “tingly braingasms” daily. AND their YouTube views are in the millions.
The validity of ASMR is still up for debate, but there is no denying the power of the tribe. And the appeal of these videos (to a certain group of people).
There is also true power in Attunement.
You know, listening? So, as a blogger, work daily to fine-tune your radar and work to build up your own “Super human laser.”
We’ve all heard “the money is in the list,” but part of your magic comes when you develop a balance. A true way to listen to your list.
According to Pink, Extroverts might just talk too much and listen too little. Introverts might listen too much (or suffer from too much empathy).
Ambiverts are right in the middle. They listen carefully, but don’t let the heart win out. They don’t push too much. They don’t empathize too much. They are right in the middle.
That, my friend, is where you need to be.
Instead of “laser,” let’s call it Super-human Radar. It’s a special power you should work on perfecting if you want to make it in the digital jungle.
